Elasticity, thickness and warmth
Compared to the other two classes, knitted fabrics are much more elastic, which accounts for their historical use in stockings and other clothing that requires changes in shape. Hence, dresses and lingerie made from knitted fabrics can be more form-fitting than counterparts made from a woven fabric. Knitted fabrics can stretch from 0 to 500%, depending on their material and knitting pattern. Lace knitting generally produces the most flexible fabric, since it has large holes that can deform in shape; by contrast, cable knitting generally produces the least flexible fabric, since the stitches are crossed under tension, which inhibits deformation. Knitted fabrics that do not deform much are called stable knits. For comparison, woven fabrics typically deform only along their bias direction i.e., at 45 to the warp and weft directions and only by a small amount; however, a woven fabric made with a stretchable material such as Lycra may deform more than a stable knit.
The elasticity of knitted fabrics gives them an excellent drape, but this is opposed somewhat by their generally greater thickness compared to wovens. Thus, the turn of the cloth (i.e., the maximum curvature of a fold of the fabric) is generally finer in woven fabrics than in knitted fabrics. For this reason, knitted fabrics resist wrinkles better than wovens, but do not generally take a crease.
Knitted fabrics are generally warmer and more comfortable than woven fabrics, which is why they are worn closer to the body. Moreover, knitted fabrics are often made from wool, which stays warm even when wet; wool is preferred since it is more elastic than most fibers and produces more even, beautiful knits. In general, elasticity and warmth are opposing qualities in a knitted fabric, since the most elastic knitted fabrics, such as lace, have the largest holes and are thus less insulating.
Structure of knitted fabrics
Knitted fabrics are divided into two basic types: warp-knit fabrics such as tricot and weft-knit fabrics such as a hand-knit sweater. Weft-knit items have the drawback that they run when cut. Warp-knit fabrics are often used in lingerie.

Knitting stitches
Over the long history of knitting across the world, hundreds of different knitting stitches have been created.
The basic building blocks of all hand knitting are the following stitches: knit, purl, cast on, cast off, increase and decrease stitches. Use of a combination of these methods can provide a vast number of different textures to knitted fabrics.
In order to save space in knitting patterns, the names of stitches are normally abbreviated Knitting abbreviations.

History of knitwear
Coco Chanel's 1916 use of jersey in her hugely influential suits was a turning point for knitwear, which became associated with the liberated woman.[1] Shortly afterwards, Jean Patou's cubist-inspired, color-blocked knits were the sportswear of choice.[1]
In the 1940s came the iconic wearing of body-skimming sweaters by sex symbols like Lana Turner and Jane Russell, though the 1950s were dominated by conservative popcorn knits.[1] The swinging 1960s were famously manifested in Missoni's colorful zigzag knitwear.[1] This era also saw the rise both of Sonia Rykiel, dubbed the "Queen of Knitwear" for her vibrant striped sweaters and her clingy dresses, and of Kennedy-inspired preppy sweaters.[1]
In the 1980s, knitwear emerged from the realm of sportswear to dominate high fashion; notable designs included Romeo Gigli's "haute-bohemian cocoon coats" and Ralph Lauren's floor-length cashmere turtlenecks.[1]
Contemporary knitwear designers include Diane von Furstenberg[2] and James Perse.

Indian Art

The paraguayan Indian art can be divided in two parts:
The Indian art as such, which comprises ceracmics, baskets, weaving and threading, feather art and leather work
The mixed Indian art, which comprises the embroideries, lace, wood carving and different metal products.
Hand made products
The hand made products of Paraguay are of a great variety and comprise from ceramic articles as well as the embroideries and threads, not forgeting the wood, the basket, leather work and silver work. The Pre colombine ceramics made in the paraguayan territory was rustic and from terracota, painted in red, and occasionally in black and white, it used to be worked by hand with the colombin system and some tribes used to put a carving decoration before cooking it on fire.
The Spanish, specially the jesuits, raised the technical level of production and the finishing of the native ceramics, characterized by the extreme simplicity and the useful character, teaching the Indian population in the missions.
Thanks to its attraction the ceramics pieces were more, and most of them were with glass, based on the salt and eggs, a technique that was lost after their expulsion.
The ceramic products that are still being produced today by some Indian groups are jars, flower vase4s, and some without specific shapes, as well as water vases. Among those, the ones that are more widely sold due to its beauty and quality are the ones coming from Tobaty and Ita.
The threading and weaving work
The Indian thread and weaving work are an important source of income for the domestic economies. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the Indians used a horizontal piece of material to make the hamocs with cotton threads, as well as the baskets, bags to transport food and nets for fishing and hunting. Later on they also knitted ponchos and other dresses. Just like the case of the ceramics, the jesuits also introduced new techniques in this area, using the vertical frame to make the threads and then they began producing sheets, towels, blankets, table clothes and other articles, as well as the special hamocs, which were knitted and still are with cotton trheads and ornaments on the sides.
Also, the new technical resources brought by the Spanish conquerors gave space to the typical cotton dresses, the ones called ao poi, made with a fine thread, and the povyi, a little wider thread weaving, as well as the linen, and the beautiful ?andut, which means spider web in guarani language and consists of fine embroidery with which table clothes, curtains , blouses and more are made.
The most wanted ones are the ?anduti embroideries made in the cities of Guarambar e Itaugu. Also we can mention the weaved ponchos by its beauty and quality, made by the ethnic groups lengua, maskoy, chulupi and mataco from the Chaco. They use sheep wool tinted in red and the ones called of 60 lists, made in Piray y Yataity, departament ofGuair.
Baskets and weaving of Karaguata

Baskets
The baskets, for which fibers of canes are used to produce open baskets and with handles, hand fands, shades, plates mats, canes and bamboos, and specially piri, the typical paraguayan hat of the country men. The leather products, such as bags, hats, sacks, etc have their main centers in Limpio and Luque, where there is also a production of beautiful baskets.
The rich Indian basket production of Paraguay has some division depending on the plantations, for example some communities where the main crops are mandioca and baskets have developed solid vases of great capacity, as well as the ajaka mbya, which has an average of 35 centimetres with rigid structures that permit to hold the heavy weigh of the mandiocas.
The ajak are made of a weaving of tacuarembo and dark guembepi, making braided figures as well as geometric ones, in accordance with the concept of the guarani beauty. The basket making associated to the production of corn has developed somewhat smaller and lighter vases , made of pindo palm tree leaves.
The weaving of Karaguata
The weaving of Karaguata is an important element of the Indian art. It is an expression of the Indian community of the Chaco. The bags of Karaguata are some of the most common applications of the fiber braides. The collectors bags are mainly used by women, who carry them on their backs and have a form of a big half moon, the hunting bags are smaller, rectangular, carried by men on their...(and so on)

Company history
The London bus operation of the National Express Group Travel London came into existence in its current guise when National Express bought out Connex Bus (established in UK in 1996, a division of French owned transport corporation Connex) in 2004. Ironically had taken over an existing operator Limebourne Buses which had actually taken over the original Travel London when it was originally sold.
In 2005 NEG expanded again with the takeover of the London Bus operations of Tellings-Golden Miller as well as 15 Surrey County Council contracts. Travel London is the sister company of Travel West Midlands and Travel Dundee.
Overview
Following the acquisitions of Limebourne, Connex Bus, Tellings-Golden Miller, Wings Buses and Link-Line, Travel London has a wide operating area within Greater London and Surrey. The company operates contracts on behalf of Transport for London (TfL), Surrey County Council, and Kingston University. Operations are split between three registered companies.
Surrey services renamed Travel Surrey
From early September 2007, the Surrey routes operated from Byfleet depot were re-branded as Travel Surrey.
Future - National Express Group re-branding
On 11 November 2007, National Express Group announced plans to re-brand their UK bus service companies (including Travel London) under the National Express identity. The new name National Express London was meant to have be unveiled in 2008, however as of February 2009 all vehicles have still been using the Travel London fleetname.

MR16 (sometimes referred to as MR-16) is a standard format for halogen reflector lamps made by a variety of manufacturers. MR16-compatible LED lamps are also available. MR16 lamps are regularly used in place of compact fluorescent lamps or standard incandescent light bulbs for applications including residential lighting and retail lighting. MR16 lamps were originally designed for use in slide projectors. They are well suited to a variety of applications that require directional lighting of low to medium intensity, such as track lighting, recessed ceiling lights, desk lamps, pendant fixtures, landscape lighting, retail display lighting and bicycle headlights.

Designation
MR16 is a coded designation in which MR stands for Multifaceted Reflector and 16 is the number of eighths of an inch the front is in diameter, in the case of MR16: 2 inches.
Halogen MR16 Characteristics
Halogen MR16 lamps consist of a halogen capsule (bulb) integrated with a pressed glass reflector. The reflector of an MR16 lamp is 2 inches (50mm) in diameter. The base conforms to Bipin GU5.3 standard. The compact size of the MR16 allows for much smaller, more discreet fixtures than the incandescent reflector bulbs that pre-dated MR16s.
The reflector controls the direction and spread of light cast from the lamp. MR16 lamps are available with different beam angles from narrow spot lights of as small as 7 degrees to wide flood lamps of 60 degrees.
"MR" refers to multifaceted reflector, indicating that this reflector is usually shaped with multiple small facets. This multifaceted reflector gives a soft edge to the area illuminated by the lamp. MR16 lamps are also available with smooth reflectors, resulting in a sharper fall-off to the illuminated area. "16" refers to the maximum diameter of the lamp in eighths of an inch, 16/8" or 2 inches (5cm).
In less-expensive lamps, the reflector has an aluminium coating that reflects all light. In more-expensive lamps, the reflector commonly has a dichroic coating that reflects particular frequencies of the visible spectrum in the direction the lamp is facing, while not reflecting infrared light. By not reflecting infrared light (which produces heat), these lamps reduce the amount of heating of the subject they are focussed on. The combination of the halogen light source and dichroic coating also means that these lamps provide a high color rendering index and a higher color temperature than standard incandescent bulbs. This makes them well suited to applications where color rendering is important, such as retail display lighting.
The brightness of MR16 lamps can be adjusted when used with appropriate fixtures and dimmers. However, the color temperature changes significantly when the lamp is dimmed.
MR16 lamps produce significant heat, and care must be taken to avoid contact with skin or proximity to flammable materials when the lamp is on or has been on recently.
Halogen MR16 lamps are typically more efficient than standard incandescent bulbs, but not as efficient as fluorescent lamps or LED technology. MR16 lamps typically have a life expectancy of 1000 to 3,000 hours.
With both types of incandescent bulbs, useful life can be considerably shortened if their filaments experience mechanical shock or vibration. Using an electronic transformer with a 'soft start' feature can considerably extend life as it reduces the characteristically high inrush current which occurs shortly after switch on. Additionally, it can be less strainful on the eyes, giving the pupils more time to react to a sudden increase in environmental lighting level.
MR16 lamps, like all quartz-halogen lamps, produce substantial amounts of ultraviolet light. Usually, this must be filtered out. Also, the quartz capsule of the lamp sometimes ruptures ("explodes") upon failure of the lamp. For these two reasons, some MR16 lamps include a cover glass that serves as an integrated ultraviolet filter and explosion shield. MR16 lamps lacking this cover require the use of a fixture that incorporates an external piece of glass specifically designed to provide this protection.
MR16-Compatible LED Lamps
Main article: LED bulb

LED MR11, 70 lm/W LED MR16
MR16-compatible LED lamps are also available. They are similar in shape to halogen MR16 lamps, and can be used in most fixtures designed for MR16 lamps. The same is true of MR11-compatible LED lamps.
Versions of the led lamps have been patented in the UK[citation needed]. Due to the low heat and power consumption they have been produced from plastic although this does not affect their efficiency. Their non-polarised AC/DC...(and so on)

It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with Blue Box Recycling System . (Discuss)
A Blue Box container is a rigid plastic container used to hold domestic recyclable waste. It was first introduced in the recycling programs, often called the 'Blue Box program', in Ontario in the 1980s. Blue Boxes were first introduced in Kitchener, Ontario's East Ward neighborhood. The curbside recycling concept was conceived by Jack Rosen, working with Nyle Ludolph he helped spearhead the worlds first 'Blue Box program' The boxes were used by householders to store separated recyclable materials including:
Newspapers
Glass jars and bottles
Aluminum or steel cans
Plastic PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles used for beverages were added when they became available in Ontario.
Householders carry their Blue Box containers to the curb in the evening before or on the day of the recycling pickups in collection vehicles. Specially designed trucks are employed to collect the separated materials. The trucks are equipped with several compartments that hold one or more material. For example, old newspapers in one compartment, metal cans in another and glass containers in a third. The trucks are operated by a single person who not only drives but sorts the materials into the special compartments as required. Some programs now allow the householder to mix all recyclables in the same Blue Box. As a result, the new trucks do not have separate compartments for the items and the sorting is done at a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) by manual and mechanical processes using specialized equipment.
The Blue Box quickly replaced "paper drives" and other early forms of recycling.
Today[when?], many municipalities operate Blue Box programs that accept all forms of paper materials, most plastic packaging, glass containers, aluminium cans and steel cans. For example, the city of Greater Napanee accepts:
Glass bottles and jars, including all glass containers which previously contained a food or beverage product.
Metal food and beverage cans, including all hard shell steel or aluminium containers which previously contained a food or beverage product.
Aluminum foil meaning food wrap, food packaging and kitchenware such as pie plates made from a thin sheet of aluminum.
Rigid shell plastic containers including polyethylene terephthalate (PETE#I), high density polyethylene (HDPE #2), low density polyethylene (LDPE #4), polypropylene (PP #5) and polystyrene (PS #6), which previously contained a non-hazardous consumer product.
Rigid foam plastic containers.
Newspapers, magazines, flyers and household papers.
Old boxboard and old cardboard (non-waxed, flattened & bundled no larger than 30"x3O1'x8").
Bundled plastic bags (LDPE).
Other material as designated by the town from time to time.
The municipality provides the Blue Boxes to residents in areas serviced by the recycling program. This usually includes all single-family homes and townhouse units receiving garbage collection. Tenants of apartment buildings typically do not use Blue Boxes but rather deposit their household recyclable materials in larger containers located in or near the building.
In some jurisdictions, larger blue bins are replacing the blue box due to the limited space to hold large volumes of recyclable materials.
Many of these programs were able to be partially self-supporting with the sale of the collected materials on the commodity market. However in 2008, the market value of recyclables has declined significantly, which reduces the revenue produced.
Other containers to collect recyclable products:
Green box - used in North York, Ontario
Green bin - composted materials
Grey box - paper and cardboard
Recycling bins - boxes with holes to allow users to drop in material for recycling
Green Box - used in Timmins, Ontario for all materials being recycled

"Mowers" redirects here. For other uses, see Mowers (disambiguation).

A self propelled Case Windrower.
A mower is a machine for cutting crops or plants that grow on the ground. A smaller mower used for lawns and sports grounds (playing fields) is called a lawn mower or grounds mower, which is often self-powered, or may also be small enough to be pushed by the operator. Grounds mowers have rotary or reel cutters. Larger mowers are used to cut hay or other crops and place the cut material into rows, which are referred to as windrows. Often, such mowers are called windrowers or mower-conditioners. Swathers are also used to cut hay and grain crops.
Larger mowers are usually ganged (equipped with a number or gang of similar cutting units), so they can adapt individually to ground contours. They may be powered and drawn by a tractor or draft animals. The cutting units can be mounted underneath the tractor between the front and rear wheels, mounted on the back with a three-point hitch or pulled behind the tractor as a trailer. There are also dedicated self propelled cutting machines, which often have the mower units mounted at the front and sides for easy visibility by the driver.
Prior to the invention and adoption of mechanized movers, (and today in places where use of a mower is impractical or uneconomical), hay and grain was cut by hand using scythe or sickle.
Boom or side-arm mowers are mounted on long hydraulic arms, similar to a backhoe arm, which allows the tractor to mow steep banks or around objects while remaining on a safer surface.
The cutting mechanism in a mower may be one of several different designs
Sickle mowers, also called reciprocating mowers, bar mowers, or finger-bar mowers, have a long (typically six to seven and a half feet) bar on which is mounted fingers with stationary guardplates. In a channel on the bar there is a reciprocating sickle with very sharp sickle sections (triangular blades). The sickle bar is driven back and forth along the channel. The grass, or other plant matter, is cut between the sharp edges of the sickle sections and the finger-plates (this action can be likened to an electric hair clipper). The bar rides on the ground, supported on a skid at the inner end, and it can be tilted to adjust the height of the cut. A springloaded board at the outer end of the bar guides the cut hay away from the uncut hay. The so-formed channel, between cut and uncut material, allows the mower skid to ride in the channel and cut only uncut grass cleanly on the next swath. These were the first successful horse-drawn mowers on farms and the general principles still guide the design of modern mowers.

Rotary cutters mounted on the Windrower shown above.
Rotary mowers, also called drum mowers, have a rapidly rotating bar, or disks mounted on a bar, with sharpened edges that cut the crop. When these mowers are tractor-mounted they are easily capable of mowing grass at up to 20 miles per hour (32 km/h) in good conditions. Some models are designed to be mounted in double and triple sets on a tractor, one in the front and one at each side, thus able to cut up to 20 foot (6 metre) swaths. In rough cutting conditions the blades attached to the disks are swivelled to absorb blows from obstructions. Mostly these are rear-mounted units and in some countries are called scrub cutters. Self-powered mowers of this type are used for rougher grass in gardening and other land maintenance.
Reel mowers, also called cylinder mowers (familiar as the hand-pushed or self-powered cylinder lawn mower), have a horizontally rotating cylindrical reel composed of helical blades, each of which in turn runs past a horizontal cutter-bar, producing a continuous scissor action. The bar is held at an adjustable level just above the ground and the reel runs at a speed dependent on the forward movement speed of the machine, driven by wheels running on the ground (or in self-powered applications by a motor). The cut grass may be gathered in a collection bin. This type of mower is used to produce consistently short and even grass on bowling greens, lawns, parks and sports grounds. When pulled by a tractor (or formerly by a horse), these mowers are often ganged into sets of three, five or more, to form a gang mower. A well-designed reel mower can cut quite tangled and thick tall grass, but this type works best on fairly short, upright vegetation, as taller vegetation tends to be rolled flat rather than cut.
Flail mowers have a number of small blades on the end of chains attached to a horizontal axis. The cutting is carried out by the ax-like heads striking the grass at speed. These types are used on rough ground, where the blades may frequently be fouled by other objects, or on tougher vegetation than grass, such as brush (scrub). Due to the length of the chains and the higher weight of the blades, they are better at cutting thick brush...(and so on)

Technical Details
A DVD player has to complete these tasks:
Read a DVD disc in ISO UDF version 1.2 format
optionally decrypt the data with either CSS and/or Macrovision
read and obey the DVD's Regional lockout codes and display a warning if the player is not authorised to play the DVD
decode the MPEG-2 video stream with a maximum of 10 Mbit/s (peak) or 8 Mbit/s (continuous)
decode sound in MP2, PCM or AC-3 format and output (with optional AC-3 to stereo downsampling) on stereo connector, optical or electric digital connector
output a video signal, either an analog one (in NTSC, PAL or SECAM format) on the composite, S-Video, SCART, or component video connectors, or a digital one on the DVI or HDMI connectors
CD/DVD/RMVB playback
Additionally, most DVD players allow users to play audio CDs (CDDA, MP3, etc.) and Video CDs (VCD). A few include a home cinema decoder (i.e. Dolby Digital, Digital Theater Systems (DTS)). Some newer devices also play videos in the MPEG-4 ASP video compression format (such as DivX) popular on the Internet, as well as the RMVB video compression format.
Output
Most hardware DVD players have to be connected to a television set; there are also some small portable devices which have an LCD screen attached.
Portable DVD Player
Main article: Portable DVD Player
Portable DVD players that are capable of playing DVDs. Most have an LCD screen and stereo speakers and are usually powered by lithium ion batteries. Portable DVD players are often used for long road trips and travel.
Prices
As of 2005[update], retail prices for such a device, depending on its optional features (such as digital sound or video output), start between 30 and 80 USD/Euro. They are usually cheaper than VCRs.
Manufacture
As of 2002[update] the largest producer of DVD players is China; in 2002 they produced 30 million players, more than 70% of the world output. These producers have to pay US$15-$20 per player in license fees, to the patent holders of the DVD technology (Sony, Philips, Toshiba and Time Warner) as well as for MPEG-2 licenses.[1] To avoid these fees, China has developed the Enhanced Versatile Disc standard as an intended successor of DVD; as of 2004[update], EVD players were only being sold in China.
Software
Software DVD players are programs that allow users to view DVD videos on a computer with a DVD-ROM drive. Some examples are the VLC media player and MPlayer (both free software), as well as WinDVD, PowerDVD and DVD Player.[2]
History
The first DVD players were introduced in Japan in November 1996, and DVD players were first available in the United States in March 1997.[3]
Successors
There are Failures to the DVD player: the HD DVD player and the Blu-ray Disc player. On February 19, 2008, Toshiba announced it would cease production on all HD DVD products ultimately naming Blu-ray players the successor to DVD players.

Image from a video contact angle device. Water drop on glass.
The contact angle is the angle at which a liquid/vapor interface meets the solid surface. The contact angle is specific for any given system and is determined by the interactions across the three interfaces. Most often the concept is illustrated with a small liquid droplet resting on a flat horizontal solid surface. The shape of the droplet is determined by the Young Relation. The contact angle plays the role of a boundary condition. Contact angle is measured using a contact angle goniometer. The contact angle is not limited to a liquid/vapour interface; it is equally applicable to the interface of two liquids or two vapours.

Typical contact angles
Consider a liquid drop on a solid surface. If the liquid is very strongly attracted to the solid surface (for example water on a strongly hydrophilic solid) the droplet will completely spread out on the solid surface and the contact angle will be close to 0. Less strongly hydrophilic solids will have a contact angle up to 90. On many highly hydrophilic surfaces, water droplets will exhibit contact angles of 0 to 30. If the solid surface is hydrophobic, the contact angle will be larger than 90 . On highly hydrophobic surfaces the surfaces have water contact angles as high as 150 or even nearly 180. On these surfaces, water droplets simply rest on the surface, without actually wetting to any significant extent. These surfaces are termed superhydrophobic and can be obtained on fluorinated surfaces (Teflon-like coatings) that have been appropriately micropatterned. This is called the Lotus effect, as these new surfaces are based on lotus plants' surface (which has little protuberances) and would be superhydrophobic even to honey. The contact angle thus directly provides information on the interaction energy between the surface and the liquid.
Sometimes the contact angle is measured through the gas instead of through the liquid, which reverses 0 and 180 in the above explanation.
Thermodynamics

A contact angle of a liquid sample
The theoretical description of contact arises from the consideration of a thermodynamic equilibrium between the three phases: the liquid phase of the droplet (L), the solid phase of the substrate (S), and the gas/vapor phase of the ambient (V) (which will be a mixture of ambient atmosphere and an equilibrium concentration of the liquid vapor). The V phase could also be another (immiscible) liquid phase. At equilibrium, the chemical potential in the three phases should be equal. It is convenient to frame the discussion in terms of the interfacial energies. We denote the solid-vapor interfacial energy (see surface energy) as ?SV, the solid-liquid interfacial energy as ?SL and the liquid-vapor energy (i.e. the surface tension) as simply ?, we can write an equation that must be satisfied in equilibrium (known as the Young Equation):

where ?0 is the equilibrium contact angle. The Young equation assumes a perfectly flat surface, and in many cases surface roughness and impurities cause a deviation in the equilibrium contact angle from the contact angle predicted by Young's equation. Even in a perfectly smooth surface a drop will assume a wide spectrum of contact angles between the highest (advancing) contact angle, ?A, and the lowest (receding) contact angle, ?R. The equilibrium contact angle (?0) can be calculated from ?A and ?R as was shown by Tadmor [1]:

Where,

and,

The contact angle can also be used to determine an interfacial energy (if other interfacial energies are known). This equation can be rewritten as the Young-Dupre equation:

where ?WSLV is the adhesion energy per unit area of the solid and liquid surfaces when in the medium V.
Measuring methods

A modern contact angle goniometer.
The static sessile drop method
The sessile drop method is measured by a contact angle goniometer using an optical subsystem to capture the profile of a pure liquid on a solid substrate. The angle formed between the liquid/solid interface and the liquid/vapor interface is the contact angle. Older systems used a microscope optical system with a back light. Current-generation systems employ high resolution cameras and software to capture and analyze the contact angle.
The dynamic sessile drop method
The dynamic sessile drop is similar to the static sessile drop but requires the drop to be modified. A common type of dynamic sessile drop study determines the largest contact angle possible without increasing its solid/liquid interfacial area by adding volume dynamically. This maximum angle is the advancing angle. Volume is removed to produce the smallest...(and so on)

Example of a French Manicure
A manicure is a cosmetic beauty treatment for the fingernails and hands performed either at home or in a nail salon by a nail technician. A manicure treatment can be just for the hands or nails, or can be for both. A common manicure found is the filing, shaping of the nails and the application of polish. There are also manicure services that are specialties for the hands and feet. For the hands, the soaking of a softening substance and the application of a lotion is a common specialty. Another common specialty is applying a similar treatment to the feet and toenails. This is called a pedicure. The word "manicure" derives from Latin: manus for "hand," cura for "care."
In addition to the filing, polishing, and painting of fingernails, a manicure may also include the application of artificial nail tips, acrylics or artificial nail gels. Some manicures can include the painting of pictures or designs on the nails or applying small decals or imitation jewels.
In many areas, manicurists are licensed and follow regulation. Since skin is manipulated and is sometimes trimmed, there is a certain risk of spreading infection when tools are used across many people and, therefore, sanitation is a serious issue.

History

Ex-servicewomen learning manicure techniques, 1945
Manicures began 5000 years ago. In India, henna was used for manicure. The term mehendi, used synonymously for henna, derives from the Sanskrit mehandika. Much of the modern revival of henna derives from its popularity in India. Cixi, the Dowager Empress of China, was known to keep very long naturally-grown nails.[1]
French manicures are manicures designed to resemble a natural nail, and are characterized by natural pink base nails with white tips. The tips of the nail are painted white while the rest of the nail is polished in a pink or a suitable nude shade. French manicures may have originated in 18th-century Paris and were popular in the 1920s and 1930s.[citation needed] Like any style it is chosen for a variety of aesthetic reasons. Many choose it because it is very simple and give nails a natural look. [2]

Main article: Artificial nails
Nail hardening
An alternative to acrylic nails is to harden your natural nail by using a fluoride treatment. Fluoride claims to harden your nails just as it hardens your teeth. However, some fluoride nail treatments contain Ammonium Hexafluorophosphate rather than Stannous fluoride, which is the type of fluoride normally used in toothpaste.
Paraffin treatments

Long, manicured nails are a fashion statement.
The hands can be dipped in melted paraffin wax for softening and moisturizing. Paraffin wax is used because it can be heated to temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, without burning or injuring the hand.[citation needed] The intense heat allows for deeper absorption of emollients and essential oils. The wax is usually infused with various botanical ingredients such as Aloe vera, chamomile, tea tree oil, and azulene. Fruit waxes such as peach, apple and strawberry are often used in salons.
Occasionally, lotion is rubbed on the hand before submersion into the paraffin bath. The hand is usually dipped more than once to allow a thicker wax coat to form, making the coating stay warm for longer and less likely to break or tear prematurely. After the hands have been dipped in the wax, they are wrapped in either plastic or aluminum foil, or a special type of plastic bag or glove then covered with towel or special mitten to retain warmth. The hands are left for a few minutes before the paraffin is cooled and dried.
Hot oil manicure
A hot oil manicure is a specific type of manicure that cleans the cuticles and softens them with oil. It works well for dry skin and nails that are brittle as it improves both by leaving them soft and pliable. Types of oils that can be used are mineral oil, olive oil or commercial preparation in an electric heater.

Cleaning out a side sewer line with a heavy-duty motorized snake
A plumber's snake, sometimes known as a "toilet jack" or "electric eel", is a flexible auger used to remove clogs in plumbing that cannot be loosened with a plunger.
Most devices consist of a coiled metal wire with space between the coils at the end. The other end is attached to a device with a crank that rotates the wire as it moves down into the pipe. Drains are cleared by one of several mechanisms:
The auger end of the wire digs itself into the clog much like a corkscrew, allowing retrieval of the object causing the clog when the snake is pulled out. (Commonly hair, combs, small toys, cloth.)
The end of the snake breaks up the object, allowing it to pass through the drain. (Commonly tree roots, foam insulation, plastic objects.)
The snake flails around the inside surface of the pipe, scraping off accumulated matter (ranging from mineral deposits to bacon fat) which was reducing the effective interior diameter of the drain pipe.
The auger should be turned clockwise only, unless it has become jammed in the drain. Not only is this essential for retrieval of foreign objects, but for the longevity of the cable.[citation needed]
Auger Varieties
Hand augers, also known as hand spinners, are useful for clearing sink and bathtub drains. Note that they should never be used in toilets, as they may damage the bowl or become knotted in the large diameter drain pipe beneath. A rule of thumb is that a 1/4" cable should never be used in a drain larger than 2".
Closet augers (named after water closets) feed a relatively short auger through a piece of metal tubing shaped like a "J". This allows them to easily be fed into water closets (flush toilets); a plastic boot on the end of the auger protects the finish of the visible porcelain. Since most toilet clogs occur in the trap built into the bowl, the short cable is sufficient to break up or retrieve the vast majority of clogs.
Heavy-duty drum augers are motorized and have removable blades that may be attached to the end. These devices are able to cut through or break up tree roots and other stubborn objects. Used unskillfully, they will also readily break plastic or copper plumbing. Many are available with television cameras attached (ie. Ridgid's SeeSnake line), allowing inspection of the pipe's condition.
If the auger cannot break up or dig itself into the clog, the clogged section of the pipe (which can usually be located by measuring the length of the auger that has gone into the pipe) may have to be replaced by a plumber.

The introduction to this article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject. Please help improve the article with a good introductory style.
An Object-based Storage Device (OSD) enables the creation of self-managed, shared and secure storage for storage networks. This moves lower-level functionalities such as space management into the storage device itself, where the device is accessed through a standard object interface. The standard OSD interface was defined in the SNIA OSD working group.. The protocol is embodied over SCSI and defines a new set of SCSI commands, standardized as a T10 protocol. Work continues on a second generation of the command set, Object-Based Storage Devices - 2 (OSD-2)
An object store raises the level of abstraction presented by today's block devices. Instead of presenting the abstraction of a logical array of unrelated blocks, addressed by their index in the array (i.e., their Logical Block Address (LBA)), an object store appears as a collection of objects. An individual object is a container of storage (object-data and object-meta-data) that exposes an interface similar to a file, and presents the abstraction of a sparsely allocated array of bytes indexed from zero to infinity.
The object store provides "fine-grain" object-level security, improved scalability by localizing space management, and improved management by allowing end-to-end management of semantically-meaningful entities.

bebe (鎻礶e-bee) stores (name is legally and officially uncapitalized)[2] is an American clothing retailer founded in 1976. Iranian-born Manny Mashouf, who emigrated to the United States in the early 1970's, opened the first bebe store in San Francisco during a time when three categories dominated the women's wear market: junior, bridge and missy. Having discovered a demographic that was neither junior nor bridge, Manny aimed to break the mold by offering this under represented population of stylish women distinctive and inspirational fashion bearing an unmistakable hint of sensuality. His concept stuck and bebe reaped early success.
bebe designs, develops and produces a distinctive line of contemporary women's apparel and accessories, which it markets under the bebe, bebeSPORT, and 2b bebe brand names.
bebe stores, inc. currently operates 312 stores, of which 215 are bebe stores, 32 are 2b bebe stores, 64 are bebeSPORT stores (this includes bebe/bebeSPORT 2-in-1 stores) and 1 is a bebe accessories store. These stores are located in the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada. bebe also has an international division in Dubai, Egypt, Israel, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, and UAE. In addition, there is an online store at www.bebe.com.
