Metalhead is a popular term for a devoted fan of heavy metal music.. Heavy metal fans exist in many countries beyond the United Kingdom and United States, where it first developed, especially in Japan, Scandinavia and Brazil and even Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Heavy metal fans have created a strongly masculine 鎻簒clusionary youth community whose core audience in the U.S. and the UK is 鎼榟ite, male, lower class youth [1] In continental Europe metal culture appeals to a more diverse audience, often spanning into the 30s and 40s and more frequently with a middle-class background and a higher cultural profile. However, the metal culture expands across the globe and is not limited to this. Metalheads affirm their membership in the subculture or scene by attending metal concerts, buying albums, and most recently, by contributing to metal websites. [2]
The long hair, leather jackets, and band patches of heavy metal fashion help to encourage a sense of identification within the subculture. [3] Like the music at its cultural core, these fashions have changed over the decades, from tight blue jeans, motorcycle boots and black t-shirts in the late 1970s and early 1980s to black jeans and army fatigue pants, military-style coats, and shaven or short-clipped hairstyles in the 1990s and 2000s. However, not all metal fans are 鎼梚sible members of the heavy metal subculture; some enthusiasts enjoy the music without adopting the metal "look" or some people may choose just to go for the long hair look.

Subculture
Heavy metal fans have created a "subculture of alienation" with its own standards for achieving authenticity within the group.[4] Deena Weinstein鎶 book Heavy Metal: The Music And Its Culture argues that heavy metal 鎼甴as persisted far longer than most genres of rock music due to the growth of an intense 鎼抲bculture which identified with the music. Metal fans formed an 鎻簒clusionary youth community which was distinctive and marginalized from the mainstream society [5]. The heavy metal scene developed a strongly masculine 鎻穙mmunity with shared values, norms, and behaviors. A 鎻穙de of authenticity is central to the heavy metal subculture; this code requires bands to have a 鎻筰sinterest in commercial appeal and radio hits and a refusal to 鎼抏ll out [6]. The metal code also includes 鎼妏position to established authority, and separateness from the rest of society. Fans expect that the metal 鎼畍ocation [for performers] includes total devotion to the music and deep loyalty to the youth subculture that grew up around it鍘; a metal performer must be an 鎼僤ealized representative of the subculture [7].
While the audience for metal is mainly 鎼榟ite, male, lower/middle class youth , this group is 鎼畉olerant of those outside its core demographic base who follow its codes of dress, appearance, and behavior .[8] The activities in the metal subculture include the ritual of attending concerts, buying albums, and most recently, contributing to metal websites. Attending concerts affirms the solidarity of the subculture, as it is one of the ritual activities by which metalheads celebrate their music. [9] Metal magazines help the members of the subculture to connect, find information and evaluations of bands and albums, and 鎻簒press their solidarity [10]. The long hair, leather jackets, and band patches of heavy metal fashion help to encourage a sense of identification within the subculture. However, Weinstein notes that not all metal fans are 鎼梚sible members of the heavy metal subculture.
Authenticity
In the musical subcultures of heavy metal and punk, the word "poseur" (or "poser") is a pejorative term used to describe "a person who habitually pretends to be something he is not."[11] The term is used to refer to a person who adopts the dress, speech, and/or mannerisms of a group or subculture, generally for attaining acceptability within the group, yet who is deemed to not share or understand the values or philosophy of the subculture. In a 1993 profile of heavy metal fans' "subculture of alienation", the author noted that the scene classified some members as "poseurs," that is, heavy metal performers or fans who pretended to be part of the subculture, but who were deemed to lack authenticity and sincerity.[12] Jeffrey Arnett's 1996 book Metalheads: Heavy Metal Music and Adolescent Alienation argues that the heavy metal subculture...(and so on)

Delta Air Lines Flight 1288 was a regularly scheduled flight from Pensacola, Florida to Atlanta, Georgia on a McDonnell-Douglas MD-88 equipped with Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 turbofan engines. During the flight's takeoff roll from runway 17 at Pensacola, the aircraft experienced an uncontained, catastrophic turbine engine failure that caused debris from the front compressor hub of the number one left engine to penetrate the left aft fuselage. The impact left two passengers dead and two severely injured. The pilot aborted takeoff and the airplane stopped on the runway. Three other passengers sustained minor injuries during the emergency evacuation. Most of the passengers were traveling on vacation.[1]

Pre-Flight Inspection
During the pre-flight investigation, the First Officer noted a few drops of oil coming from the "bullet" or tip of the number one (left) engine, although it was said to be "not that serious". The First Officer also noticed a couple of missing rivets on the left wing. The Pilot told NTSB investigators that both problems were observed as non threatening and that the aircraft was airworthy, therefore maintenance was not informed.[2]
Takeoff and Incident
At 2:23P CDT Delta Flight 1288 was cleared for takeoff on Runway 17. As the First Officer was advancing the throttles and reaching an airspeed of 40 knots, the cockpit lost lighting and instrumentation. The rear cabin passengers and flight crew heard a very loud bang and experienced a blast-like sensation. The pilot then abandoned takeoff by bringing the throttle to idle and engaging the brake which brought the aircraft to an eventual stop without use of reversers or spoilers.[2] Anita S. Saxton and 12 year-old Nolan Saxton sustained fatal injuries; 15 year-old Derrick Saxton and 9 year-old Spencer Saxton were listed in "Good Condition" at Sacred Heart Hospital on July 7, 1996.[1]

Left engine nose inlet cowl abandoned on the runway.
Once the aircraft stopped the First Officer attempted to contact the tower, however was unable due to the cockpit's lack of power. The flight crew then activated emergency power contacting Pensacola tower and declaring an emergency. The cockpit's jump-seat passenger, an off-duty Delta Boeing 767 pilot, went to inspect the rear of the aircraft. When the First Officer saw the over-wing exits open and about half of the passengers missing along with engine noise, he returned to the cockpit and advised the captain to kill the engines. At 2:27P CDT the pilot requested emergency medical assistance due to the jump-seat passenger's report of a large hole in the fuselage, engine debris throughout the cabin, and injured passengers. He then reported there was no evidence of smoke or fire in the cabin, and that the rear cabin door had been opened and the emergency slide was inflated. The flight attendant who initiated the evacuation through that door told NTSB that she saw fire on the left engine therefore abandoned evacuation through that door and directed passengers forward. She reported that there were many injuries and possibly two dead, therefore she began to evacuate the plane until she was stopped by the First Officer. Due to the damage to and danger at the rear of the aircraft, the air stairs built into the MD-88 were found unsuitable to use. The captain then requested for portable air stairs to deplane passengers which arrived 25 minutes later.[2]
NTSB investigation
After a total investigation, the NTSB determined the most probable cause of the accident was a fracture in the left engine's front compressor fan hub, which resulted from failure of the airline's Fluorescent Penetrant inspection process to detect a potentially dangerous crack in the fan which originated from the engine's initial manufacture. The NTSB also contributes the accident to the failure of Delta's maintenance team to discover the problem. There were a confirmed two severe injuries and two fatalities.[2]
Aftermath
As of January 2009 Flight 1288 is no longer used as the PNS to ATL flight. It is used as a SEA to CVG...(and so on)

History

Allis-Chalmers GRV 23 PS, 1958
Allis-Chalmers first entered the manufacturing business in the 1840s. It made waterwheel, sawmill and grindstones. While originally incorporated in Delaware, the company soon became a major manufacturer of steam engines and industrial equipment in the Milwaukee area after merging with other firms--Fraser & Chalmers were a large steel and mining retort manufacturer. The company's presence in Milwaukee became so large that its plants were once used as a landmark there, and, in particular, its "west" plant lent its name to the city of West Allis. Allis-Chalmers entered into the farm equipment business in 1914 at about the time of the World War I. The company would also play a major part as a manufacturer in the World War II building pumps for uranium separation as part of the Manhattan Project and building electric motors for U.S. Navy submarines. Allis Chalmers also built triple expansion marine steam engines for Liberty ships.
The company introduced a number of product lines including Agricultural Tractor, Implements, Industrial Tractor, Gleaner Combines, Hydroturbines, Valves and Pumps, Compressors, Electric Motors, Crushing and screening equipment, Comminution, Air Purification, Coal Gasification and Simplicity Garden Tractors.
A series of acquisitions were made by the company beginning in 1928 with the acquisition of Monarch Tractor Company. In 1931, the company acquired Advance-Rumely based in LaPorte, Indiana. Buda Engine Co., based in Harvey, Illinois was acquired in 1953. Two years later the company acquired Gleaner Harvester Co., and in 1959 it acquired the French company Vendeuvre. Allis-Chalmers also acquired Simplicity, which was later sold to its management in 1983.
The company began to struggle in the 1980s in a climate of rapid economic change. It was forced amid financial struggles to sell its farm equipment division to K-H-D (Kl?ckner-Humboldt-Deutz) AG of Germany in 1985, the owners of Deutz-Fahr, which was renamed Deutz-Allis. Deutz-Allis later was sold to management and became what is now the AGCO Corporation (AGCO), and tractors were sold under the AGCO-Allis name - though later this became just AGCO. What remained of the manufacturing businesses were dispersed in 1998 and the company officially closed its offices in Milwaukee in January 1999 The remaining service businesses became Allis-Chalmers Energy in Houston, Texas.
In April, 2008, Briggs & Stratton Corp. announced that it would sell lawn tractors under the Allis-Chalmers brand name.[citation needed]
Agricultural machinery
Allis-Chalmers offered a complete line of agricultural machinery, from tillage and harvesting to tractors.
Generators
In 1965 Allis-Chalmers built "Big Allis" or Ravenswood No.3, the biggest generator of its time. It's located in Queens NY and the total output is 1000 MW. It is still operational today.
Fuel cell golf carts
In 1965 Allis-Chalmers built hydrogen fueled fuel cell golf carts[1].

The Commodore LCD (sometimes known in short as the CLCD) was an LCD-equipped laptop made by Commodore International. It was presented at the January 1985 Consumer Electronics Show, but never released. The CLCD was not directly compatible with other Commodore home computers, but its built-in Commodore BASIC 3.6 interpreter could run programs written in the Commodore 128's BASIC 7.0, as long as these programs didn't include POKE commands. Like the Commodore 264 series computers, the CLCD had several ROM-based office application programs.
The CLCD featured a 2 MHz Rockwell 65C102 CPU (a 6502 variant) and 32 KB of RAM. The BASIC interpreter and application programs were built into 96 KB of ROM.

(Redirected from Progressive Scan DVD Player)
A progressive scan DVD player is a DVD player that can output video in a progressive scan format such as 480p or 720p. Players which can output resolutions higher than 480p are often called upconverting DVD players.
Before HDTVs became common, players were sold which could output 480p. TVs with this feature were often in the upper price range of a manufacturer's line. To utilize this feature, a TV or other display with a progressive scan input was needed. HDTVs usually have a progressive scan input; progressive scan inputs are less common on standard definition TVs (often called SDTVs.)
Some players have a feature called "3:2 pulldown detection" or "inverse telecine" which attempts to better handle the artifacts which result from differing film and video rates in conjunction with interlaced scanning of the film.
Progressive scan output can not use connections intended for interlaced video, such as composite video (single RCA terminated cable) and S-Video (Mini-DIN terminated cable). The following connection methods are common:
VGA (using a standard VGA connector)
Component Video (using three cables terminated with RCA connectors)
DVI or HDMI (Most recent methods, supported by many newer HDTVs)

The Genesis is Panavision's high-end digital movie camera, which uses a proprietary, full frame 35mm-width, 1.78:1 (16:9) aspect ratio, 12.4-megapixel RGB filtered CCD. It was first used by a feature crew to shoot Bryan Singer's Superman Returns and was shortly followed up thereafter by the World War I film Flyboys. However, the CGI-heavy nature of these two movies meant that ultimately that the comedy Scary Movie 4 was the first theatrically released feature sourced primarily from the Genesis camera.

Background
Unlike the 2/3" 3-CCD RGB imaging system used in the CineAlta HD-900F (used in Attack of the Clones), the Genesis uses a single 12.4 megapixel CCD chip with the same width as a Super 35mm film frame. The "Panavized" CineAltas didn't use Panavision's existing range of 35mm film lenses and have different depth-of-field characteristics.
Most photographic lenses designed for film cameras cannot be adapted to work on 3-chip video cameras. In many cases, the prism block simply leaves no room for the rear element of the lens. In cases where the lens does fit, the resulting optical aberrations created by the prism (primarily spherical) would destroy image quality. Apart from this, the sensors on a "2/3 inch" video camera are closer in size to a 16mm film frame and so would produce a similar depth of field.
Panavision originally tried to overcome this problem with optical adaptors that fitted between the cine lens and the video camera but these have all produced an unacceptable drop in image quality. Most productions using the Sony HDCAM cameras therefore used lenses of Zeiss, Angenieux, Canon and Fujinon.
Apart from this, there were a number of operational problems with both the lenses and cameras used for Attack of the Clones, and so for Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas severed his long-standing relationship with Panavision in 2003, obtaining newer-model Sony HDC-F950 cameras and lenses from Plus8Digital instead.
In an attempt to address these and other problems, Panavision followed this up in 2004 with the Genesis, a full bandwidth (4:4:4) camera with improved colorimetry and sensitometry-related specs and, probably most importantly, a Super 35 mm film-sized recording area, thus making it focally compatible with regular Cine Primo lenses and giving a true 35 mm depth of field.
Technical specification
The Genesis uses a 12.4 megapixel CCD chip, arranged in a 5760x2160 horizontally RGB filtered array. The vertical resolution is cut in half to 1080 by pixel binning, so the final output pixel resolution is 1920x1080, about 2/3 the resolution of a 2k film scan. The chip has an HDTV-style 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio, similar in size to Super35 3-Perf film. The CCD active area is .930 in. x .523 in. This is a significant breakthrough in that it allows just about any Panavision spherical 35mm cine lens to be used. However there are as yet unanswered questions about the resultant color quality, since single-chip NTSC and PAL color cameras using the exact same color-stripe sampling technique have always performed poorly compared to equivalent 3-chip models. The main imaging module of the Genesis is made by Sony, but the exact relationship between the two companies is unclear, since their joint partnership was dissolved in 2004 with Panavision's re-purchase of the 8% shareholding Sony bought in 2000.
The Genesis can record in a custom Panalog color space, which is a log color space that it is also 4:4:4 unlike traditional HD. The tone-curve is different than the Cineon log format used for film post-production, but preserves highlight detail that would be lost with typical video gamma correction.
There have also been numerous complaints about the small black and white viewfinders. B&W finders are actually strongly preferred by generations of broadcast camera operators, who understand that a high resolution black & white finder is a very highly refined instrument. It has about 3 times the resolution of a color finder: Hence best for critical focus. An influx of camera operators from the film industry however, has created demand for a color viewfinder. To address this, Panavision uses the Sony HDVF-C30W TFT color LCD viewfinder (960x540 pixels), which is compatible with both the CineAlta and the Genesis cameras. Cocoa beans in a cacao pod

Cocoa beans before roasting
Cocoa is the dried and fully fermented fatty seed of the cacao tree from which chocolate is made. "Cocoa" can often also refer to the drink commonly known as hot chocolate[1]; cocoa powder, the dry powder made by grinding cocoa seeds and removing the cocoa butter from the dark, bitter cocoa solids; or it may refer to the combination of both cocoa powder and cocoa butter together.[2][3]
A cacao pod has a rough leathery rind about 3cm thick (this varies with the origin and variety of pod). It is filled with sweet, mucilaginous pulp called 'baba de cacao' in South America, enclosing 30 to 50 large almond-like seeds (beans) that are fairly soft and pinkish or purplish in color.
Cocoa should not be confused with the coca plant which can be used to create cocaine.

History
The cacao tree is native to the Americas. It may have originated in the foothills of the Andes in the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America where today, examples of wild cacao still can be found. However, it may have had a larger range in the past, evidence for which may be obscured because of its cultivation in these areas long before, as well as after, the Spanish arrived. It may have been introduced into Central America by the ancient Mayas, and cultivated in Mexico by the Olmecs, then by the Toltecs and later by the Aztecs. It was a common currency throughout Mesoamerica and the Caribbean before the Spanish conquest.
Cacao trees will grow in a limited geographical zone, of approximately 20 degrees to the north and south of the Equator. Nearly 70% of the world crop is grown in West Africa.
Cocoa was an important commodity in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Spanish chroniclers of the conquest of Mexico by Hern閱 Cort闁 relate that when Montezuma II, emperor of the Aztecs, dined he took no other beverage than chocolate, served in a golden goblet and eaten with a golden spoon. Flavored with vanilla and spices, his chocolate was whipped into a froth that dissolved in the mouth. It is reported that Montezuma II may have consumed no fewer than 50 portions each day, and 200 more by the nobles of his court.
Chocolate was introduced to Europe by the Spaniards and became a popular beverage by the mid 1600s.[4] They also introduced the cacao tree into the West Indies and the Philippines.
The cacao plant was first given its botanical name by Swedish natural scientist Carolus Linnaeus in his original classification of the plant kingdom, who called it Theobroma ("food of the gods") cacao.

3,607,052t (3,550,084LT; 3,976,094ST) in 2004 (record).
This is an increase of 131.7% in 30 years, representing a cumulative average growth rate (CAGR) of 2.8%.
There are three main varieties of cacao: Forastero, Criollo, and Trinitario. The first comprises 95% of the world production of cacao, and is the most widely used. Overall, the highest quality cocoa beans come from the Criollo variety, which is considered a delicacy [2]. Criollo plantations have lower yields than those of Forastero, and also tend to be less resistant to several diseases that attack the cocoa plant, hence very few countries still produce it. One of the largest producer of Criollo beans is Venezuela (Chuao and Porcelana). Hacienda San Jos, located in Paria/Venezuela, cultivates Criollo beans. The total area is of this hacienda is 320 hectares, of which 185 hectares are devoted to cacao with a density of 1.000 plants per hectare. Trinitario is a hybrid between Criollo and Forastero varieties. It is considered of...(and so on)

Madras is a lightweight cotton fabric with patterned texture, used primarily for summer clothing -- pants, shorts, dresses and jackets. The fabric takes its name from the former English name of the city of Chennai, India.
One style popular during the 1960s was called bleeding Madras. It used dyes that were not colorfast in a typically plaid design, resulting in bleeding and fading colors that yielded a new look to the fabric each time it was laundered.
The fabric is mentioned many times in the S.E. Hinton book The Outsiders as a favored clothing worn by the Socs, normally as a shirt or a jacket.

The very first "kit" version of the Aster CT-80 running Newdos/80. Note that the 64x16 TRS-80 mode screen uses only a small part of the monitor screen, because the letters are the same size as the 80x25 CP/M screen, this was one of the things that was soon after fixed with the redesign to a commercial product
The Aster CT-80, an early home/personal computer developed by the small Dutch company MCP (later renamed to Aster Computers), was sold in its first incarnation as a kit for hobbyists. Later it was sold ready to use. It consisted of several Eurocard PCB's and a backplane. It was the first commercially available Dutch personal/home computer. [1]. The Aster computer could use the software written for the popular Tandy TRS-80 computer while fixing many of the problems of that computer, but it could also run CP/M software, with a big amount of free memory and a full 80x25 display, and it could be used as a Videotext terminal.

Models
Three models were sold. The first model looked like the later IBM PC (which came on the market years later), a rectangular base unit with two floppy drives on the front, and a monitor on top with a separate detachable keyboard. The second incarnation was a much smaller unit the width of two 5 1/4" floppy drives stacked on top of each other, and the third incarnation looked like a flattened Apple ][ with a built-in keyboard.
All units ran much faster than the original TRS-80, at 4 MHz, (with a software selectable throttle to the original speed for compatibility purposes) and the display supported upper and lower case, hardware snow suppression (video ram bus arbitration logic), and an improved character font set. The floppy disk interface supported dual density, and disk capacities up to 800 KB, more than four times the capacity of the original TRS-80. A special version of NewDos/80, (an improved TRS-DOS compatible Disk operating system) was used to support these disk capacities when using the TRS-80 compatibility mode.
For the educational market a version of the first model was produced with a new plastic enclosure (the First Asters had an all-metal enclosure) that also had an opening on the top in which a cassette recorder could be placed. This model was used in a cluster with one Aster (with disk drives) for the teacher, and eight disk less versions for the pupils. The pupils could download software from the teachers computer through a network based on a fast serial connection, as well as sending back their work to the teachers computer. There was also hardware in place through which the teacher could see the display of each pupils screen on his own monitor.
Working modes
The Aster used 64KB of RAM memory and had the unique feature of supporting two fundamentally different internal architectures: when turned on without a boot floppy or with a TRS-DOS floppy, the Aster would be fully TRS-80 compatible, with 48KB or RAM. When the boot loader detected a CP/M floppy, the Aster would reconfigure its internal memory architecture on the fly to optimally support CP/M with 60 KB free RAM for programs and an 80 x 25 display. This dual-architecture capability only existed on one other TRS-80 clone, the LOBO Max-80.
With a special configuration tool, the CT-80 could reconfigure its floppy drivers to read and write the floppies of about 80 other CP/M systems.
A third mode was entered with a special boot floppy which turned the Aster into a Videotex terminal with a 40x25 display and a Videotex character set, The software used the built in RS232 interface of the Aster to control a modem through which it could contact a Prestel service provider.
Sales
Most Aster CT-80's (about 10 thousand of them) were sold to schools for computer education, in a project first known as the "honderd scholen project" (one hundred schools project), but which later involved many more than just one hundred schools. MCP received this order from the Dutch government because their computer met all the technical and other demands, including the demand that the computers should be of Dutch origin and should be built in the Netherlands. Another important demand was that the computers could be used in a network (Aster developed special software and hardware for that). Later however the Government turned around and gave 50% of the order to Philips and their P2000 homecomputer even though the P2000 did not meet all the technical demands, was made in Austria and did not have network hard nor software.
The company
Aster computers was based in the small town of Arkel near the town of Gorinchem. Initially Aster computer b.v. was called MCP (Music print Computer Product), because it was specialized in producing computer assisted printing of sheet music. The...(and so on)

A grinder containing a small amount of herbs

The fine screen of a Space Case which will hold the larger pieces of herb. The bottom compartment is visible which is where the pollen will be collected.
A herb grinder (also called a "spice grinder", or just a "grinder") is a cylindrical contraption with two halves (top and bottom) that separate and have sharp teeth or pegs aligned in such a way that when both halves are turned, material placed inside is effectively shredded.
Some grinders also have two or three compartments instead of just one, with a fine screen separating the bottom compartment from the top. This allows fine particles such as pollen to pass through, but blocks larger plant material.
Grinders called "four-stages" are also popular. "Four-stages" are similar to regular grinders, but include a second fine screen to further separate "pollen" or other tiny plant matter.
There are also 5 stages grinders by many manufacturers now, and most are using an anodized process to coat the raw material they are made from.
Herb grinders are manufactured with the intent as culinary kitchen tools often used to prepare spices and cooking herbs for culinary preparation. It is also used to prepare tobacco, traditional herbs and Cannabis for smoking. A pollen-catching grinder will collect a more potent form of the medicinal plant known as kief, or pollen from traditional plants and herbs.
And Rickys top tip is: Don't Tap it together!

Norsk Hydro industry park on Her?ya
Her?ya is a peninsula in the municipality of Porsgrunn. It is located between the fjords of Frierfjord to the west and Gunneklevfjord to the east, at the mouth of Telemarksvassdraget, The name stems from the word hare because the large number of these that is said to have inhabited the previous island (?ya).
The peninsula features a large industrial park that was founded in 1928 and contains major facilities of Norsk Hydro, Yara, and REC (ScanWafer subsidiary). The area is served by the railway line Bratsbergbanen. 2,700 people work on the 1.5 km2 peninsula that has about 30 companies, most of which are subsidiaries of Norsk Hydro, including Hydro's research park with 350 employees. A populated area south of the peninsula itself which was initially housing for the Hydro employees, is also considered part of Her?ya as a suburb of the city of Porsgrunn.
Her?ya also has a local football club, participating in the Norwegian 6th division. The club stadium, Her?ya Stadion, has a capacity in surplus of 2000.

History
Originally an island that was used for agriculture, in 1928 Norsk Hydro decided to locate a new artificial fertilizer factory there, Hydro Porsgrunn, and in just 16 months both this factory and a shipping port for Norwegian saltpeter (calcium nitrate) were built. In the process, the narrow sound between the island and the mainland was mostly filled up, thus transforming the island to a peninsula. The reason Hydro wanted to establish itself in the Grenland region was the proximity to limestone, one of the necessary components in the fertilizer, Calcium nitrate. Norsk Hydro had previously had to build its fertilizer plants in Notodden (in 1907) and Rjukan (in 1909) because technology at that time didn't allow for efficient transport of electricity long distances from the power plants to the place of use. But in the 1920s technology had developed and it was possible to locate the plants close to the natural resources instad of close to the hydro electric power plants, that were located in the mountains in Northern Telemark. [1]
Another important function was the establishment of a port for the export of fertilizer from Norsk Hydro's plants in Telemark. The Telemark Canal had been used for transport from Notodden from the start of operations there, while a railway, Rjukanbanen, had been built to the plant in Rjukan to Notodden. In 1916 this railway was extended as Bratsbergbanen to Skien, and then to Her?ya when it opened, replacing the need for the canal. Since then there has been opened other plants at Her?ya, including a production plant for PVC (in 1951).
Following the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany in April 1940 the German occupying force had plans to build Aluminium and Magnesium plants in Her?ya. The construction of the plant by Norsk Hydro in partnership with the Luftwaffe-operated Nordische Aluminium Aktiengesellschaft (Nordag) was however ended on July 24, 1943 when a bombardment by American B-17 Flying Fortresses completely destroyed the facilities, killing 55 construction workers. Later, in the fifties, Hydro would take up these plans and build a magnesium factory, which was rebuilt in 2002 to a metal recycling facility.
Post-WWII Her?ya
In the reminiscing book UT. Fra en oppvekst i forrige ?rhundre by historian Harald Berntsen, portrayals are given of incidents and milieus in Her?ya, from the time when his family moved there in 1951 (from downtown Porsgrunn), just before he was to begin school, and until 1960. The book explains among other things the way in which the different residential areas in Her?ya were related to status and hierarchy in the Hydro community. Berntsen's family lived in a flat on Torggata, on the peninsula proper, to the west of the Gunneklevfjord, in a recently built 4-flat house which the father had been given by Hydro.
Torggata
"On both sides of Torggata up on the right, one 'owned home' after the other, within well-groomed gardens fenced in with chain link fences and gates ... In front of the residence and down on the left, Torggata has recently been elevated and graveled, but not yet asphalted. On the other side of the street, the Germans have left a long two-storey barrack ... On both sides of Torggata down on the left, endless open yards with grass and weeds, thistles and nettles. The yards end in a fertile belt of tall, wavering rushes with a forest of brown cigars on the top, in front of the enclosed Gunneklevfjord, glittering in the sun in all hues of pollution. On the left side of the fjord Hydro's factory buildings tower proudly, in particular the tallest round tower which day and night pumps out the thick, yellow smoke which always gives the wind strength...(and so on)
