It is based in Fremont, California.Contents1 Technology 2 Performance and Product Characteristics 3 Management and Investors 4 Production 5 CIGS Competitors 6 References 7 External links // TechnologySolyndra designs, manufactures and sells solar photovoltaic (PV) systems comprised of panels and mounting hardware for large, low-slope commercial rooftops. The panels perform optimally when mounted horizontally and packed closely together, thereby, the company claims, covering significantly more of the typically available roof area and producing more electricity per rooftop on an annual basis than a conventional panel installation [1].The solar panels developed by the company are unlike any other product ever tried in the industry. The panels are made of racks of cylindrical tubes (also called tubular solar panels), as opposed to traditional flat panels. Solyndra rolls its copper-indium-gallium-diselenide (CIGS) thin films into a cylindrical shape and places 40 of them in each 1-meter-by-2-meter panel. The cylindrical solar panels (think of fluorescent tube lights...except in reverse) can absorb energy from every direction (direct, indirect and reflected light). Each Solyndra cylinder, which is one inch in diameter, is made up of two tubes. The company uses equipment it has developed to deposit CIGS on the outside of the inner tube, which includes up to 150 CIGS cells. On top of the CIGS material, it adds an "optical coupling agent," which concentrates the sunlight that shines through the outer tube. After inserting the inner tube into the outer tube, each cylinder is sealed with glass and metal to keep out moisture, which erodes CIGS' performance. The sealing technology is commonly used in florescent bulbs..[2].When combined with a white roof (which are the fastest growing segment of the commercial roof industry with over 1 billion square feet installed in 2008 and are required for any new commercial construction in California), the company claims that systems that employ the panels on a given rooftop can produce significantly more electricity in a given year. With a white roof, the panels can capture up to 20% more light than with a black roof. The other advantage claimed by the company is that the panels don't have to move to track the sun. The panels are always presenting some of their face directly perpendicular to the sun [3]. The daily production of flat solar panels has an output curve that has a clear peak while solyndra systems produce more power throughout the day.The Solyndra panels allow wind to blow through them. According to the company, these factors enable the installation of PV on a broader range of rooftops without anchoring or ballast, which are inherently problematic [4]. Solyndra claims that wind and snow loads are negligible and that its panels are lighter in weight per area but these claims are disputed. The tubular form factor was also considered by Nanosolar but discarded as impractical due to a host of technical and installation issues.[5]Performance and Product CharacteristicsThe company claims the cells themselves convert 12 percent to 14 percent of sunlight into electricity, an efficiency that Gronet said is better than competing CIGS thin-film technologies [6].The company has so far refused to discuss full panel performance, the typical industry metric and the one relevant for customers. The efficiency of a Solyndra panel depends on the specifics of the rooftop they are installed on. For instance, a non-white rooftop does not reflect light and thus may rule out the use of a Solyndra panel. Even an originally white rooftop may become somewhat off-white over a period of 25 years so that it is difficult to bank on a certain kWh performance output over the years.Solyndra recently installed a solar panel on the equator in Singapore. This system is part of an effort that began several years ago. In 2006, Solyndra began deploying demonstration systems around the world. The company recently revealed that the total count is now at 14 systems and that these systems are each instrumented with highly sensitive radiation, wind speed, temperate and humidity measurement devices to aid in the development of energy yield forecasting software tools.Further, the company will be referencing the 1 and 3 year roof material reflectivity measurements collected and documented for over 2500 reflective roof surfaces by the Cool Roof Rating Council.Management and InvestorsSolyndra is led by Chris Gronet. It has recently lost several of its founding members.[7], and has been reported to have had difficulties closing its most recent financing.[8]The company claims it has received a total of $600 million since 2005 in venture capital to develop its cylindrical CIGS...(and so on)

All versions were published by Sierra Entertainment.Contents1 Objective 2 Versions 2.1 The Incredible Machine 2.2 The Incredible Machine 2 2.3 The Incredible Machine 3 2.4 Return of The Incredible Machine: Contraptions 2.5 The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions 2.6 Incredible Toons 3 Awards 4 Availability 5 See also 6 References 7 External links // ObjectiveThe general objective of the games is to create a series of Heath Robinson, or Rube Goldberg devices: arrange a given collection of objects in a needlessly complex fashion so as to perform some simple task (for example, "put the ball into a box" or "light a candle"). Available objects ranged from simple ropes and pulleys to electrical generators, bowling balls, and even cats and mice. The levels usually have some fixed objects that cannot be moved by the player, and so the only way to solve the puzzle is carefully arrange the given objects around the fixed items. There is also a "freeform" option that allows the user to "play" with all the objects with no set goal or to also build their own puzzles with goals for other players to attempt to solve.Notably, the games simulated not only the physical interactions between objects, but also ambient effects like varying air pressure and gravity. The engine does not use a random number generator in its simulation of physics, assuring that the results for any given "machine" are reproducible.VersionsThe series featured the following versions:The Incredible Machine (1992, MS-DOS / Macintosh / 3DO) The Even More Incredible Machine (1993, MS-DOS / Microsoft Windows, Macintosh) Sid & Al's Incredible Toons (1993, MS-DOS) The Incredible Toon Machine (1994, Microsoft Windows, Macintosh) The Incredible Machine 2 (1994, MS-DOS / Macintosh) The Incredible Machine 3 (1995, Microsoft Windows / Macintosh) Return of the Incredible Machine: Contraptions (2000, Microsoft Windows / Macintosh) The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions (2001, Microsoft Windows / Macintosh) The developers of the series have been criticized by fans for recycling content, specifically all the games after The Incredible Machine 2, rather than creating new additions to the games. The Incredible MachineThe Incredible Machine, the first game in the series, was originally going to be developed for Electronic Arts for the Commodore 64 in 1984, but Dynamix worked on Arcticfox for the Amiga instead and work did not start on The Incredible Machine until the spring of 1993. The Even More Incredible Machine was actually an extended version of the original The Incredible Machine and had around 160 levels, about twice the number of levels in the original game, and also had quite a few more parts. The Incredible Machine 2The Incredible Machine 2 introduced new levels, an extended assortment of parts, a new interface, significantly improved graphics, sounds, and music, and two player hotseat play. It also improved on the "freeform" mode, allowing players to create completely playable puzzles by defining not only the participating parts, but also the set of circumstances under which the puzzle will be considered "solved". In terms of gameplay, this version provided the biggest addition to the series, while subsequent updates were basically only ports of the game to newer operating systems with updated graphics/sounds and sometimes new puzzles, but no new parts. The Incredible Machine 3The Incredible Machine 3, on some releases entitled Professor Tim's Incredible Machines, contained the same levels as The Incredible Machine 2, but had a new interface, as well as compatibility with Windows 3.1. It also allowed the player to build backgrounds for the puzzles and to scale the playing field.Return of The Incredible Machine: ContraptionsIn the next two versions, Return of The Incredible Machine: Contraptions and The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions, the game interface was updated again with new graphics, music, and sounds. They featured mostly new levels, except that Return of The Incredible Machine: Contraptions contained many levels (including most of the tutorial levels) from The Incredible Machine 3. The SD stands for Secure Digital. It is commonly used in cellular phones, but also in handheld GPS devices, portable media players, digital audio players, expandable USB flash memory drives, and for Nintendo DS flashcards, along with digital cameras. It is the smallest memory card available commercially, with the lowest price per capacity and the highest capacity as of 2008[update]. At 15mm 11mm 1mm (about the size of a fingernail), it is about a quarter the size of an SD card.[1] There are adapters which allow a microSD card to be used in devices intended for SD, miniSD, Memory Stick Duo and even USB cards. However, they are not universally compatible.TransFlash and microSD cards are the same (each can be used in devices made for the other), except that microSD adds support for SDIO mode, enabling non-memory cards like Bluetooth, GPS, and Near Field Communication devices.[2]A point of confusion can come from the difference in the microSD and the newer microSDHC format. The SD and SDHC share a similar form factor, but not all devices are compatible with the newer high capacity format. This is even true with devices that have been developed by SanDisk such as their e200 series of MP3 players. Using 3rd party firmware however, SDHC reading capabilities can be possible, but an external writer is still required.[3]A 512 MB Kingston microSD card (right) next to a Patriot SD adapter (left) and miniSD adapter (middle). As of September 2008[update], microSD cards are available in capacities from 64MB to 16GB.[4] A 12GB version was developed by SanDisk but never released.[5] Cards larger than 4GB are only available in the newer SDHC format.Contents1 History 2 Comparisons 3 See also 4 References 5 External links // HistoryThe microSD format was originally created by SanDisk. It was originally called T-Flash, and then TransFlash, before being rechristened microSD when adopted by the SD Card Association (SDA). At launch, the microSD format was available in capacities of 32, 64, and 128 MB. It is the standard which defines the commonly available A4 paper size. The underlying principle is that when rectangles with width/length ratio are cut or folded in half the rectangles thus formed retain the original width/length ratio.Contents1 History 2 A series 3 B series 4 C series 5 Tolerances 6 A, B, C comparison 7 Application 8 See also 9 References 10 External links // HistoryThe international ISO standard is based on the German DIN standard 476 (DIN 476) from 1922.Some of the formats contained therein were independently invented in France during its revolution, but were later forgotten.[1]The aspect ratio used by this standard was mentioned in a letter by the German Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, written on 25 October 1786.[2]ISO 216:1975, defines two series of paper sizes: A and B ISO 269:1985, defines a C series for envelopes ISO 217:1995, defines two untrimmed series of raw paper sizes: RA and SRA A seriesA size chart illustrating the ISO A series.Paper in the A series format has a aspect ratio, although this is rounded to the nearest millimetre. A0 is defined so that it has an area of 1 m2, prior to the above mentioned rounding. Successive paper sizes in the series (A1, A2, A3, etc.) are defined by halving the preceding paper size, cutting parallel to its shorter side (so that the long side of A(n+1) is the same length as the short side of An, again prior to rounding). The most frequently used of this series is the size A4 (210 297mm). A4 paper is 6mm narrower and 18mm longer than the "Letter" paper size, 8? 11inches (216 279mm), commonly used in North America. The geometric rationale behind the square root of 2 is to maintain the aspect ratio of each subsequent rectangle after cutting the sheet in half, perpendicular to the larger side. Given a rectangle with a longer side, x, and a shorter side, y, the following equation shows how the aspect ratio of a rectangle compares to that of a half rectangle: which reduces to or an aspect ratio of The formula that gives the larger border of the paper size An in metres and without rounding off is the geometric sequence: an = 21 / 4 ? n / 2. The paper size An thus has the dimension an an + 1.The exact millimetre measurement of the long side of An is given by .B seriesA size chart illustrating the ISO B series. The B series formats are geometric means between the A series format with a particular number and the A series format with one lower number. For example, B1 is the geometric mean between A1 and A0. The sides of B0 are 1m to m.There is also an incompatible Japanese B series defined by the JIS. The lengths of JIS B series paper are approximately 1.22 times those of A-series paper. The exact millimetre measurement of the long side of Bn is given by .C seriesA size chart illustrating the ISO C series. The C series formats are geometric means between the B series format with a particular number and the A series format with the same number, (e.g., C2 is the geometric mean between B2 and A2). The C series formats are used mainly for envelopes. An A4 page will fit into a C4 envelope. C series envelopes follow the same ratio principle as the A series pages. For example, if an A4 page is folded in half so that it is A5 in size, it will fit into a C5 envelope (which will be the same size as a C4 envelope folded in half).A, B, and C paper fit together as part of a geometric progression, with ratio of successive side lengths of 21/8, though there is no size half-way between Bn and An+1: A4, C4, B4, D4, A5, ...; there is such a D-series in the Swedish extensions to the system. The exact millimetre measurement of the long side of Cn is...(and so on)

In the late 1880s and early 1890s, innovations in the extraction of alumina from ore (bauxite) and of converting this into aluminium by electroylsis had precipitated a drastic fall in the price of the metal. The electrolytic process required large amounts of cheap electricity, which could easily be provided by hydro-electric power in the Scottish Highlands. The first aluminium ingots were produced at Foyers in the highlands in 1895 with the first hydro-electric powered smelter opening in 1896 followed by two more at Kinlochleven in 1909 and Lochaber in 1929. Unsuccessful attempts at bauxite extraction in Northern Ireland forced the company to acquire a controlling interest in Union des Bauxites of Southern France. This established source was supplemented by the acquisition of bauxite rights in British Guiana during World War I followed by more in the Gold Coast, now Ghana, in 1928.The company produced carbon at three different sites in Scotland and owned four rolling mills in England. In the 1940s and 50s the company opened and/or invested in aluminium plants and infrastructure in Norway, India, Canada, British Guiana and acquired further bauxite resources in Australia. In 1958, however, finance problems led to the company being taken over by Reynolds Metals and TI Group. Despite overcapacity during the 1960s, a large smelter built on the promise of cheap nuclear generated electricity commenced production in Invergordon in 1971; this plant would close eleven years later. The company was bought again by the Canadian-based Alcan in 1982. Operations were merged and the company was renamed British Alcan Ltd. In 1994, the company produced 357,000 tonnes of aluminium and made a pre-tax proft of ?30.9m up from a loss of ?22.7m the previous year. In February 1996 it was announced that Alcan was to sell British Alcan to a group of institutional investors, Mercury Development Capital, Morgan Grenfell Development Capital and CVC Capital Partners for ?300m. The new company would be known as British Aluminium Ltd.Alcoa acquired the "aluminum plate, sheet and soft-alloy extrusion manufacturing operations and distribution businesses" of British Aluminum in 2000 from Luxfer Group who retained some of the business. Alcoa decided to close the site at Dolgarrog in North Wales in 2002. Dolgarrog Aluminium Ltd formed and the local government tried to finance saving the nearly 200 jobs there. After five years as of October 2007, during the year of the site's 100th anniversary of producing aluminum Dolgarrog was to close.[1]Notes^ "170 jobs going at aluminium plant". The vest-pocket (11 x 17 feet) lunchroom at 39 South Thirteenth Street had no tables, only a counter with 15 stools. By introducing Philadelphia to New Orleans-style French-drip coffee, which Hardart promoted as their "gilt-edge" brew, they made their tiny luncheonette a local attraction. Word of the coffee spread, and the business flourished. They incorporated as the Horn & Hardart Baking Company in 1898.[1]Rise and declineHorn and Hardart launched their first Automat in Philadelphia on June 12, 1902, borrowing the concept of automatic food service from a successful German establishment, Berlin's Quisiana Automat.[2] The first New York Automat opened in Times Square July 2, 1912. Later that week, another opened at Broadway and East 14th Street, near Union Square. In 1924, Horn & Hardart opened retail stores to sell prepackaged automat favorites. Using the ad slogan "Less Work for Mother," the company popularized the notion of easily served "take-out" food as an equivalent to "home-cooked" meals.[3][4]The Horn & Hardart Automats were particularly popular during the Depression era when their macaroni and cheese, baked beans and creamed spinach were staple offerings. In the 1930s, union conflicts resulted in vandalism, as noted by Christopher Gray in The New York Times:In 1932 the police blamed members of the glaziers union for vandalism against 24 Horn & Hardart and Bickford's restaurants in Manhattan, including the one at 488 Eighth Avenue. Witnesses said that a passenger in a car driving by used a slingshot to damage and even break the plate glass show windows. Glaziers union representatives had complained about nonunion employees installing glass at the restaurants.[5] By the time of Horn's death in 1941, the business had 157 retail shops and restaurants in the Philadelphia and New York areas and served 500,000 patrons a day.[6] During the 1940s and the 1950s, more than 50 New York Horn & Hardart restaurants served 350,000 customers a day. The chain remained popular into the 1960s with automats, sit-down waitress service restaurants, cafeterias and bakery shops. During the late 1960s, consultants attempted to focus attention on automats with interior decoration relevant to surrounding neighborhoods; thus, the Automat on 14th Street was decorated with psychedelic posters. The eateries began to close with the rise of fast-food restaurants. In 1972, August Guterman purchased the company. By the mid-1970s, at some locations, they replaced former automats with Burger King franchises.[7] Horn & Hardart further expanded into the fast food arena in 1981, with its acquisition of the Bojangles' Famous Chicken n' Biscuits chain, which it sold to a California investment company in 1990 for $20 million.[8] The last New York Horn & Hardart Automat (on the southeast corner of 42nd Street and Third Avenue) closed in April 1991.[9]Augustin Hardart was the last of three generations to manage the Automats, and his daughter, Marianne Hardart, collaborated with columnist Lorraine B. Daily to document the family history in The Automat: The History, Recipes, and Allure of Horn & Hardart's Masterpiece (Clarkson Potter, 2002).[4]RevivalsHorn & Hardart attempted to revive the automat concept with their Dine-O-Mat restaurant in New York. It closed in 1989 after less than two years in operation. In a recent revival, the Horn & Hardart name was used for a now defunct chain of coffee shops in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Horn & Hardart Coffee Co. shuttered its last coffee shop in 2005.Bamn!, a modern take on the current automats used in the Netherlands, is located in New York's East Village at 37 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.Automatic food serviceThis nickel-plated Horn & Hardart Automat coffee dispenser panel with embossed foliate and scroll devices dates from 1902-25.These cafeterias featured prepared foods behind small glass windows and coin-operated slots, beginning with buns, beans, fish cakes and coffee. Eventually, they served lunch and dinner entrees, such as beef stew and Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes. It developed into a self-service chain of restaurants that flourished in the city for nearly a century.[1]...(and so on)

Decorated year round with blue Christmas lights, it was actually the home of eccentric Indianapolis millionaire Skiles Edward Test.[1] It gained a reputation for being haunted.According to local folklore, Skiles' deceased wife was embalmed in a glass coffin inside the house, surrounded by the eerie blue lights. Test himself encouraged the rumors when he began burying the remains of some of his 150 pet cats in carpeted caskets under brass nameplates. After Test's death, no evidence was discovered that indicated his wife was buried on the property, for, in fact, he had been married three times and all three women survived him. the Public sale at auction of the possessions from the property did enhance the rumors of his eccentric later life. Nevertheless, the house was widely regarded as a "haunted" site well past Skiles' death in 1964, and is still recognized in the folklore and culture of Indianapolis. The house itself was originally of wood-frame construction, with a full exterior facade of white opaque glass brick. Many additions to the original farm house included glass solarium/greenhouses, and numerous lightning rods on the roof. A unique feature of the Test estate was an Olympic-sized swimming pool with a three-story diving tower and motorized surfboard pulley system, and alongside of the pool, an ornate brick "pool house" with guest quarters.[1]The pool circulated its water through above ground pipes that were heated in the sun and recirculated in the pool to keep the water warm. this was the first solar heated pool.Following the death of Skiles and the destruction of the house, his heirs bequeathed the property to Indy Parks and was developed into a natural resource area called the Skiles Test Nature Park.[2] A view of the property from the air in 1937 can be found at the IUPUI Skiles Test Nature Park page. The legend of the house was the subject of a month-long gothic comedy play, The Creeper of the House of Blue Lights, which was performed by the Stage Actors Workshop in Indianapolis in October 2007.[3]Contents1 Also (needs Disambiguation) 2 References 3 Further reading 4 External links // Also (needs Disambiguation)It is a strange futuristic brothel in William Gibson's "Burning Chrome".It is the name of the New Orleans brothel visited by Billy and Captain America in the film 'Easy Rider".References^ a b Bodenhamen, David J., Robert Graham Barrows and David Gordon Vanderstel. The Encyclopedia of Indianapolis. The Girt (or 鎻媟eat) Dog of Ennerdale is the name given to a mysterious creature that cut a bloody swathe through the Cumberland, England fells in 1810. Over the course of six months, the creature killed between 300 and 400 sheep.[1]
Even from the first attack, it was believed that the killings had not been done by an ordinary dog. The slain sheep had only several of its organs removed and eaten, and was drained it of its blood. [2]
Local farmers left their normal duties to track down and kill the creature, but the mystery animal. eluded them. The only evidence of its presence was an increasing number of dead livestock. The death toll increased to eight sheep a night, with many sheep mauled but left uneaten.
A ?10 reward was put out for the creature, and children were kept indoors for their safety. Alarm grew among the locals as the creature seemed to have an uncanny ability to evade the traps set for it. A belief began take hold that the beast was supernatural. Dead sheep were poisoned and left on the hillside in the hope that the animal would feed off the carcasses, but they were left untouched as the killings continued. It also had an adverse affect on other local animals. Normally brave hunting dogs set out on the trail of the animal would cower and whimper behind their masters when its scent was picked up.
Finally, one of the farmers caught a glimpse of the animal, but it was not the dog some expected it to be. It was described as very large, sandy brown in colour with dark stripes running down its back. The creature was described as having the qualities of both a large cat and a large dog.
News of the Girt Dog had spread across the county, and dozens of professional huntsmen descended on the Valley, eager to collect the reward and make a name for themselves. As many as 100 men on horseback and hundreds of dogs attempted to catch it, but the beast eluded the hunters and continued to kill.
The beast鎶 strange behaviour continued. It would sometimes kill during the day and seemed to take pleasure in savaging livestock but not feeding from them. In one instance, the creature tore lumps out of the hindquarters of a big ram and then left alive but crippled. The creature also would allow a single pursuing hunting dog to catch up to it, only to crush the dog's foreleg with its jaws.
During one hunt, the pack had pursued the beast into a small wood and armed men and hounds surrounded the copse. Escape seemed impossible. However, the creature made a break for it and ran at one hunter by the name of Will Rothery. Rothery, with a clear shot, lowered his musket, amazed at the size and strange appearance of the animal, and could only manage to shout 鎻漦erse, what a dog! as he moved to one side to let it pass. It is said Rothery was taunted about the day forever after.
However, with more hunters and their packs pouring into the valley and the odds against the Girt Dog getting higher, its demise was ultimately inevitable. A man by the name of Jonathan Patrickson got close enough to the beast to get a shot off at it, spraying the Girt Dog with pellets. The creature was now wounded and the hounds were more of a match for it. The hunt pursued the beast for many miles down to the River Ehen where the creature plunged into the water. The dogs looked on from the bank, refusing to enter. But one man, John Steel, got within range as it once again came up on the bank and mortally wounded the Girt Dog. Weakened and weary, the animal was no match for the pursuing hounds and the creature was finally killed.
The carcass was paraded about the area and when weighed it tipped the scale at 8 imperial stones (51 kg) When all the locals had seen it, it was sent to Keswick Museum and Art Gallery and stuffed for all to see. Unfortunately, a past curator who complained that, by the 1950s, the stuffed exhibit was getting very raggy and moth-eaten, decided that as it was 鎼塷wt but a girt cur dog it should be thrown out.

A stuffed Thylacine exhibit. The stuffed Girt Dog has now been lost.
Possible explanations
It is now commonly believed that the Girt Dog of Ennerdale was, in fact, a thylacine [3](otherwise known as the Tasmanian tiger or Tasmanian wolf.) Travelling circuses and menageries of the time were known to contain what were described as 鎼昳ger wolves a description that fits the thylacine perfectly. As import laws and animal control were so relaxed in the early part of the nineteenth century, an escape from one of these itinerant shows is easy to imagine. These creatures, a native of Tasmania (Australasia), were also known...(and so on)

James Mally, N.D., ear candling a patient in an experiment to determine its efficacy. [1]

Material that appears after ear candling, sometimes alleged to be earwax and toxins, was found to be residue from the candle itself.
Ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal-auricular therapy, is an alternative medicine practice claimed to improve general health and well-being by lighting one end of a hollow candle and placing the other end in the ear canal. According to medical researchers, it is both dangerous and ineffective.[2] Claims that the practice removes earwax have been thoroughly debunked.

Procedure
One end of a cylinder or cone of waxed cloth is lit, and the other placed into the subject's ear. Usually the subject is lying on one side with the treated ear uppermost and the candle vertical, and can be stuck through a paper plate or aluminum pie tin to protect against any hot wax or ash falling down the side. However, some have the subject sit up, keep the candle nearly horizontal, and watch for dripping wax. Some candles have an internal filter to catch debris. The flame is cut back occasionally with scissors and extinguished between two and four inches from the subject. Its proponents claim that the flame creates negative pressure, drawing wax and debris out of the ear canal, which appears as a dark residue.
An ear candling session can last from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, during which time a series of 1 or 2 ear candles may be burned for each ear.
Criticism
The Spokane Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic conducted a research study in 1996 which concluded that ear candling does not produce negative pressure and was ineffective in removing wax from the ear canal.[2] Several studies have shown that ear candles produce the same residue when burnt without ear insertion and that the residue is simply candle wax and soot.[3][4][5]
In October 2007, the FDA issued an alert identifying Ear Candles (a.k.a., Ear cones and Auricular candles) as "dangerous to health when used in the dosage or manner, or with the frequency or duration, prescribed, recommended, or suggested in the labeling thereof" ... "since the use of a lit candle in the proximity of a person's face would carry a high risk of causing potentially severe skin/hair burns and middle ear damage."[6]
Prof. Edzard Ernst has published critically on the subject of ear candles noting that "There are no data to suggest that it is effective for any condition. Furthermore, ear candles have been associated with ear injuries. The inescapable conclusion is that ear candles do more harm than good. Their use should be discouraged."[7]
A 2007 paper in the journal Canadian Family Physician concludes "Ear candling appears to be popular and is heavily advertised with claims that could seem scientific to lay people. However, its claimed mechanism of action has not been verified, no positive clinical effect has been reliably recorded, and it is associated with considerable risk. No evidence suggests that ear candling is an effective treatment for any condition. On this basis, we believe it can do more harm than good and we recommend that GPs discourage its use."[8]
As of 2008, there are at least two cases in which people have set their houses on fire practicing ear candling, one of which resulted in death.[9]
Product regulations
In Europe, some ear candles are regulated as medical devices, tested for safety and bear the CE mark (93/42/EEC).[10] The CE mark is mostly self-issued by the manufacturer.[11]
While ear candles are widely available in the U.S., selling or importing them with medical claims is illegal. This means that one cannot market ear candles as products that "Diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease".[6]
In a report, Health Canada states "There is no scientific proof to support claims that ear candling provides medical benefits ... However, there is plenty of proof that ear candling is dangerous." It says that while some people claim to be selling the candles "for entertainment purposes only", the Canadian government consider that there is no reasonable non-medical use, and hence any sale of the devices is illegal in Canada.[12]
Origin
Although manufacturers of ear candles often refer to them as "Hopi" ear candles, there is no such treatment within traditional Hopi healing practices. Vanessa Charles, public relations officer for the Hopi Tribal Council, has stated that ear candling "is not and has never been a practice conducted by the Hopi tribe or the Hopi people".[13]
The Hopi tribe has repeatedly asked Biosun, the manufacturer of 'Hopi Ear Candles' to stop using the Hopi name.[14] Biosun has not complied with this request and continues to claim that ear candles...(and so on)

The aim of decatising is to stabilise the properties of the fabric developed in finishing.
In decatising, the wool fabric is interleaved with a cotton, polyester/cotton or polyester fabric and rolled up onto a perforated decatising drum under controlled tension. The fabric is steamed for up to ten minutes and then cooled down by drawing ambient air through the fabric roll. The piece is then reversed and steamed again in order to ensure that an even treatment is achieved.
There are several quite different types of decatising machines including batch decatising machines, continuous decatising machines, wet decatising machines and dry decatising machines.

"Good Times Bad Times" is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin, featured as the opening track on their 1969 debut album Led Zeppelin.
For the lead guitar solo, guitarist Jimmy Page passed his Telecaster guitar through a Leslie speaker to create a swirling effect.[1][2] This type of speaker contains a rotating paddle and was designed for Hammond organ. However, guitars could be used with it. George Harrison and Eric Clapton also did this on the Cream song "Badge", and Harrison used this in several of The Beatles' recordings.[3] In an interview he gave to Guitar World magazine in 1993, Page explained that:
I do remember using the board to overdrive a Leslie cabinet for the main riff in "How Many More Times". It doesn't sound like a Leslie because I wasn't employing the rotating speakers. Surprisingly, that sound has real weight. The guitar is going through the board, then through an amp which was driving the Leslie cabinet. It was a very successful experiment.[4]
Page, also the band's producer, placed microphones all over the recording studio to capture a live sound when this song was recorded.
This song is also notable for drummer John Bonham's repeated use of a series of two sixteenth-note triplets on a single bass drum, an effect many subsequent rock drummers have imitated. Bonham had reportedly developed this technique after listening to Vanilla Fudge. He was unaware that drummer Carmine Appice was actually playing on a double bass set. As Page has stated:
The most stunning thing about the track, of course, is Bonzo's amazing kick drum. It's superhuman when you realize he was not playing with double kick. That's one kick drum! That's when people started understanding what he was all about.[4]
Bass player John Paul Jones has also remarked on his own contribution to the track:
Usually anything [by Led Zeppelin] with lots of notes was mine and anything with chunky chords was Page's. Things like "Good Times Bad Times", those are my sort of riffs, they're quite busy'.[5]
Jones says that the riff he wrote for this song was the most difficult one he ever wrote.[6]
"Good Times Bad Times" was rarely played live at Led Zeppelin concerts in its entirety. In a few instances in 1969 it was used as an introduction to "Communication Breakdown". It also appeared in almost complete form within the "Communication Breakdown" medley performed at the LA Forum on 4 September, 1970 (as can be heard on the Led Zeppelin bootleg recording Live On Blueberry Hill), and several "Whole Lotta Love' medleys in 1971. It was also the opening song for Led Zeppelin's reunion show at the O2 Arena, London on December 10, 2007.

Millennium Force is a steel roller coaster built by Intamin AG located at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. It is the fourteenth roller coaster built at the park. Standing 310 feet (95 m) tall at its highest point, the coaster overlooks Lake Erie. When built in 2000, it was the first roller coaster to be taller than 300 feet, and it was briefly the tallest complete circuit roller coaster in the world, before being beaten by Steel Dragon 2000, Cedar Point's own Top Thrill Dragster, and Kingda Ka. It is also the first roller coaster to utilize a cable lift system, rather than a traditional chain lift. A potential chain lift was considered too heavy considering that Magnum XL-200's chain was 7short tons (6t) and two-thirds as tall. The cable lift uses an 800-horsepower (600kW) motor that turns a set of sprocket gears that pulls the cable. Cable lifts were previously only used on smaller coasters in Europe. After the 2007 season, Millennium Force had given over twelve million rides total. Riders must be at least four feet tall.
Millennium Force has been voted the number one steel roller coaster in the world in Amusement Today's Golden Ticket awards five times since the year 2001, and has never been ranked lower than number two since it opened in 2000.[2] Millennium Force has switched the top position with Superman - Ride of Steel, a hypercoaster of very similar construction, three times in the last seven years.
Today, Millennium Force is no longer the tallest or fastest roller coaster at Cedar Point, having been surpassed in height and speed by Top Thrill Dragster. Nonetheless, Millennium Force remains one of the tallest, fastest, and longest steel roller coasters in the world.[3]

Ride layout
While the train is being loaded in the station, the catch car for the cable lift descends the lift and latches onto the middle car of the train. Once the train is cleared, the cable lift pulls the train up a 45 degree lift hill at 15miles per hour (24km/h) to a height of 310feet (94m). After reaching the top, the train drops 300feet (91m) down at an 80 degree angle and reaches a top speed of 93miles per hour (150km/h) at the bottom of the hill. It then climbs 169feet (52m) through a right overbanked turn at 122 degrees from the horizontal axis, then travels through a tunnel as it passes over the Frontier Trail midway. It then travels over a 182-foot (55 m) parabolic hill, which provides a moment of airtime (negative G-forces) as it passes over a lagoon and down onto Millennium Island. While on Millennium Island, the train completes a 105-foot (32m), 360-degree, right-handed helix, followed by a left overbanked turn and then a small right-hand turn before traveling over another airtime hill to exit the island. After exiting the island, the train travels left through a second tunnel, then travels over a small airtime hill over the station exit before passing by the queue. Finally, the train travels 68feet (21m) high through another right overbanked turn over the queue and is brought to a stop by magnetic brakes.

An alleged flying saucer seen over Passoria, New Jersey in 1952.
Flying saucer is the name given to a type of unidentified flying object (UFO) with a disc- or saucer-shaped body, usually described as silver or metallic, occasionally reported as covered with running lights or surrounded with a glowing light, hovering or moving rapidly either alone or in tight formations with other similar craft, and exhibiting high maneuverability.
Although disc-shaped flying objects have been interpreted as recorded occasionally since the Middle Ages, the first highly publicized sighting by Kenneth Arnold on June 24, 1947, resulted in the creation of the term by U.S. newspapers. Although Arnold never specifically used the term "flying saucer", he was quoted at the time saying the shape of the objects he saw was like a "saucer", "disc", or "pie-plate", and several years later added he had also said "the objects moved like saucers skipping across the water." (see Arnold article for list of newspaper quotes) Both the terms "flying saucer" and "flying disc" were used commonly and interchangeably in the media until the early 1950s.
Arnold's sighting was followed by thousands of similar sightings across the world. Such sightings were once very common, to such an extent that "flying saucer" was a synonym for UFO through the 1960s before it began to fall out of favor. However, the term is still often used generically for any UFO.
More recently, the flying saucer has been largely supplanted by other alleged vehicles such as the black triangle.[1] The term UFO was, in fact, invented in 1952, to try to reflect the wider diversity of shapes being seen. However, unknown saucer-like objects are still reported, such as in the widely-publicized 2006 sighting over Chicago-O'Hare airport.
Many of the alleged flying saucer photographs of the era are now believed to be hoaxes. The flying saucer is now considered largely an icon of the 1950s and of B-movies in particular, and is a popular subject in comic science fiction.[2]

"The Baptism of Christ", 1710, by Aert de Gelder; flying saucer shooting down beams or religious symbolism?
Perhaps the oldest recording of a saucer-shaped object is from 1290, when a silver disc was reported flying over a village in Yorkshire.[3] Disc-like flying objects were occasionally reported throughout the millennium. For example, in a mass sighting over Nuremberg in 1561, discs and spheres were reported emerging from large cylinders. (woodcut at left) They also frequently show up in religious artwork,[4] though it is usually ambiguous as to whether the artists were trying to depict something that had been seen or whether there was obscure religious symbolism involved. In particular, artwork of the Annunciation of Mary frequently shows a narrow beam of light descending from a saucer-like object. (examples at right and lower left)
However, perhaps the first well-documented instance to specifically compare the objects to saucers, and the first to be widely reported, was the Kenneth Arnold sighting on June 24, 1947, while Arnold was flying near Mount Rainier.[3] He reported seeing 9 brightly-reflecting vehicles, one shaped like a crescent but the others more disc- or saucer-shaped, flying in an echelon formation, weaving like the tail of a kite, flipping and flashing in the sun, and traveling with a speed of at least 1,200 miles per hour (1,900 km/h).[5] In addition to the saucer or disc shape (Arnold also used the terms "pie plate" and half-moon shaped), he also later said he described the motion of the craft as "like a saucer if you skip it across water", leading to the term "flying saucer" and also "flying disc" (which were synonymous for a number of years).

Immediately following the report, hundreds of sightings of usually saucer-like objects were reported across the United States and also in some other countries. The most widely publicized of these was the sighting by a United Airlines crew on July 4 of nine more disc-like objects pacing their plane over Idaho, not far from Arnold's initial sighting. On July 8, the Army Air Force base at Roswell, New Mexico issued a press release saying that they had recovered a "flying disc" from a nearby ranch (the so-called Roswell UFO incident, which was front-page news until the military issued a retraction saying that it was a weather balloon.
On July 9, the Army Air Force Directorate of Intelligence,...(and so on)
